Culture Nurtures Unity : "Culture is a collective word. It nurtures people, nurtures communities, empires, nations. It is an identity, not only clothes, art, art forms but also thought and behavior and in the way we relate to the known and the unknown. It defines the Macro Person called the community and its relationship with the Micro Person called the individual. It brings unity and not uniformity, for the culture celebrates variety. Lack of understanding of this strength leads to conflicts; clear understanding leads to meaningful, sustainable and harmonious development. Development takes place when culture, cultural forms are validated to meet the needs of the time."
The Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture Project of Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakumari, (VKIC) was established in 1993 at Guwahati. Its focus area is primarily in culture and spirituality as manifested in the region, and how they are deeply intertwined with the ethos of the rest of the country. VKIC seeks to promote its work through seminars, lectures and workshops. No less important, it carries out a range of intellectual projects in various parts of the Northeast focusing on the spread of much needed awareness among communities leading to rebuilding their self-confidence.
Through its outreach programmes the VKIC also holds meetings and lectures in different places where local communities take part with enthusiasm. It hopes to bring to light selected individuals and their works in preservation and promotion of indigenous traditional faith among various communities. Already it has built up a formidable knowledge bank that encompasses the little known but significant faith and belief systems of some communities.
Aims and Objectives:
- Understand the richness of our traditional systems
- Identify the unifying elements that bind us
- Provide meaningful continuity to these practices in a fast-changing complex lifestyle and
- To be relevant in time – hence Development through Culture.
